Truly Terrifying Horror Games
Truly terrifying horror games you can buy and download right now. Most of these games are fairly cheap, but do not let that fool you as they are really intense. The best thing is that most of them are under $20 so you can get them on the cheap, download and play them immediately.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
This is the horror game to play. If you have not played it and you enjoy horror games, do so right now as it is a fantastic example of a horror game. It features some interesting game-play dynamics in that you begin to hallucinate as your character loses his sanity. Furthermore, if you focus on monsters your view becomes distorted as your character begins to get scared.
This game has really developed a strong reputation for being one of the scariest games ever. It can be hard to say what makes horror work because it is an emotional response, but this one definitely works!
Penumbra Collection
Made by the some developers of Amnesia, the Penumbra games came first and while not as scary as Amnesia they still manage to hold their own. This pack of three games is great value for $9.99, and for anyone who likes a horror game that is less action and more avoidance of enemies this collection of Amnesia games is the choice for you.
Dead Space 2
Some would argue that the first game, Dead Space, was the scarier one. However, the game-play story and quality of visuals in this game are simply better than the first game. The creatures in this game are Necromorphs, which most strongly resemble The Thing from the film of the same name. This makes them quite an interesting enemy as they can have very strange shapes and grotesque appearances. The only problem with the game is that it can get a bit over-the-top with gore. For some people this is disturbing, but most will find it just a little excessive and therefore silly. Still, the overall experience is great and it is now selling at a very low price so definitely worth considering.
One of the best features of this game is that it has a disturbing story behind it. Essentially, the earlier actions of the primary protagonist lead to the death of his love interest Nicole and one of the great things about the game is that the protagonist’s sanity is constantly in question as he has conversations with his late love. This really gives the game an extra punch and is certainly worth a play given it is now under $20.
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Condemned: Criminal Origins builds its tension through its environment and through the very effective use of a crime theme. Even Zero Punctuation’s Yahtzee seemed to quite like this game, save for a few issues, which makes it pretty impressive. If you want a game focused a little more around a criminal investigation theme, this is the one to choose.
